Garlic and Onions Prevent Abnormal Cell Growth An article published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition discussed regular consumption of onions and garlic and decreased risk of several common abnormal cellular growths. Individuals with highest intake of onions showed an 84% reduction in risk of abnormal cellular growth within the oral cavity and pharynx, 88% reduced risk of abnormal cellular growth within the esophagus, 56% reduction within the colon/rectal system, 83% reduction in the larynx, 25% reduction in the breast, 73% reduction in the ovaries and 71% reduction in the prostate. Similarly, individuals with highest garlic intake showed reductions in abnormal cellular growth in various tissues, anywhere from 10% to 57%. Researchers concluded this uniquely large data set from southern European populations showed an inverse association between frequency of use of allium vegetables and risk of several common abnormal cellular growths.
