Grape Seed Extract Decreases Colon Cancer

The American Cancer Society estimates 145,000 new cases of colon cancer and 56,000 deaths from colon cancer occurred in 2005. Because colon cancer takes a long time to progress from benign to malignant, there is an opportunity to employ health care strategies in the form of health screenings and supplementation.

The list of foods and supplements that can help maintain colon health includes: 30-35 grams of fiber per day, 15 micrograms of broccoli extract per day, olive oil, 400 mg of calcium per day, Conjugated Linoleic Acid, 9 mg of vitamin B6 per day, more than 30 mg of flavonoids per day and 480 mg of curcumin and 20 mg of quercetin 3 times a day.

A new study has found that grape seed extract (GSE) may also help reduce colon cancer. Prior studies have used 300 mg per day GSE for high blood pressure.

In the study published in the October 15, 2006 issue of Clinical Cancer Research, researchers exposed colorectal cancer cells to 25, 50, and 100 micrograms per milliliter of grape seed extract in a lab setting. They found that in as little as 12 hours the three GSE dosages decreased cancer cell levels by 11%, 27%, and 48%, respectively. By 48 hours, there was as much as an 85% decrease.

The researchers found that the higher the dosage, the greater the effect on the colorectal cancer cells. The researchers also found that GSE exerted this effect by stopping replication of the cancer cells, thereby theoretically stopping the cancer cells from spreading in humans.

The researchers concluded, ‘GSE may be an effective preventive agent against colorectal cancer.”
