Vitamins A, C, E and Magnesium Often Deficient in Americans The U.S. Department of Agriculture's chief scientific research agency, the Agricultural Research Service's Food Surveys Research Group (FSRG), recently released a study indicating that most Americans are deficient in Vitamin E and that a substantial number of people are also lacking other important nutrients in their diet. The report "What We Eat in America, NHANES 2001-2002: Usual Nutrient Intakes from Food Compared to Dietary Reference Intakes" is based on survey interviews of 9,000 subjects nationwide. The subjects were asked about their consumption of foods and beverages, but not supplements. The study concluded that 95 percent of Americans are not getting desirable intakes of vitamin E from foods and beverages. In addition, the report found that more than half of Americans aren’t getting enough magnesium, 40 percent are deficient in vitamin A, and roughly one third aren't consuming enough vitamin C.
