Mitochondrial Dysfunction Associated With Alzheimer's Disease

Researchers have provided new information about how communication among neurons may be prevented from deteriorating in conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease.

Deterioration of synapses and axons can be delayed thanks to a protein created by a gene called the slow Wallerian degeneration (Wlds) gene.

These results reveal for the first time that mitochondria are involved in the protection of neurons provided by the Wlds gene and suggest that targeting some of the proteins identified in this study may lead to novel therapies for the treatment of AD, motor neuron diseases, and prion diseases.

Read details of this Alzheimer's Disease mitochondrial dysfunction study.
