Vitamin E Tocotrienols Protect Against Stroke

Published in the October issue of the American Heart Association’s journal STROKE, Vitamin E tocotrienols showed significant protection against stroke-induced injury compared with matched controls.

Oral supplementation with tocotrienols in spontaneously-hypertensive rats led to increased brain levels of tocotrienols. This unique form of vitamin E at subattomole quantity protected neurons from glutamate-challenge, consistent with previous reports that at low doses, the neuroprotective property of tocotrienol is not shared by tocopherol. Alpha-tocopherol itself had no effect at such low doses.

Cinnamon Increases Insulin Sensitivity in Pre-Diabetes Sufferers

Integrity Nutraceuticals International (INI) announced the results of a recent clinical study on Cinnulin PF (R), the company's patented water extract of cinnamon ingredient. The placebo-controlled, double-blind study conducted by the Ohio Research Group examined the effect of supplementation with Cinnulin PF on blood glucose regulation, lipid profiles and body composition in pre-diabetic men and women.

Results show that subjects in the Cinnulin PF group noted statistically significant decreases in fasting blood glucose levels, marked improvements in insulin sensitivity and no statistically significant changes in clinical blood chemistries.

USDA studies show cinnamon promotes glucose metabolism and supports healthy cholesterol levels in individuals with type 2 diabetes.

High Homocysteine Related to Reduced Memory in Seniors

Researchers at Boston University have found that having high blood levels of homocysteine, an amino acid formed during metabolism, is related to a greater decline in cognitive function after the age of sixty than that experienced by individuals whose levels of homocysteine are lower. No such relationship between cognitive function and homocysteine levels was observed in younger people.

In prior studies, homocysteine has been associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease among other adverse health conditions. In this study, researchers stated: "Managing homocysteine levels by taking vitamins B12, B6, folate and betaine (trimethylglyceine TMG) could offer a side-effect-free way to prevent difficulties in memory and recall later in life."

Green Tea Helps Protect Against Alzheimer's Disease

A compound found in green tea may help protect the brain from Alzheimer’s disease (AD) according to findings of researchers at the University of South Florida (USF) in Tampa published in the September 21 2005 issue of the Journal of Neuroscience.

After two months of injections of EGCG from green tea to mice bred to develop neurodegenerative disease, the team observed a decrease in beta-amyloid containing plaques of up to 54 percent.

Jun Tan, MD, PhD, director of the Neuroimmunology Laboratory at USF stated, "If beta-amyloid pathology in this Alzheimer's mouse model is representative of Alzheimer's disease pathology in humans, EGCG dietary supplementation may be effective in preventing and treating the disease."

Melatonin Lessens Pain from Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Melatonin helps reduce abdominal pain associated with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), report researchers at the National University Hospital in Singapore.

In the Singapore study, 40 subjects with both IBS and sleep disturbances assigned to one of two groups. The study group received 3 mg of melatonin at bedtime for two weeks, while the control group received placebo. After just two weeks of supplementation, the melatonin-supplemented subjects experienced 58% less abdominal pain, compared to 18% in the placebo group.

Bromelain Reduces IBD Colon Inflammation

Oral supplementation with bromelain decreases inflammation of the colon in animals with active inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) while reducing the incidence and severity of spontaneous colitis, report researchers at Duke University Medical Center.

Duke University researchers report that oral treatment with up to 1000 mg a day of high-quality bromelain led to a decreased incidence and severity of spontaneous colitis in genetically susceptible mice after 18 weeks. Bromelain supplementation also significantly reduced inflammation in test animals with established IBD.

Nutrient Triad Reverses Early Macular Degeneration

A combination of nutrients improves vision and reverses pathological changes in adults with early macular degeneration, according to a recent study conducted by Italian researchers.

This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study enrolled 106 patients with bilateral macular degeneration. The subjects received either a nutrient combination or placebo for 12 months. The nutrient combination included 200 mg acetyl L-carnitine, 780 mg omega-3 fatty acids, and 20 mg coenzyme Q10 daily.

The area of the eye's fundus covered by drusen (degenerated retinal pigment cells that are a precursor to macular degeneration) in the treated group decreased by 15% to 23%, while increasing by more than 10% in the placebo group. The results suggest that supporting mitochondrial health may be useful in preventing and managing macular degeneration.

A more complete abstract is here: Improvement of visual functions and fundus alterations in early age-related macular degeneration treated with a combination of acetyl-L-carnitine, n-3 fatty acids, and coenzyme Q10.

Can I order Avemar overseas to save money?

We have had a couple of clients ask us if they can order Avemar from overseas to save money.

While we trust that the product is authentic, we suggest that you carefully question whether it will be safely shipped to you to retain its potency. Avemar should not be exposed to temperatures exceeding 80 degrees Fahrenheit to retain its potency.

The shipping cost as quoted by FedEx, the post office, and UPS for 2-4 day delivery from Europe is $70 to $80 for a 1-month supply that is properly packaged with cold packs. If you think the European company will be spending this money for shipping to you, and the shipper will speed your package through customs so that it arrives closer to 2 days than 4, and won't hold the package on Saturday and Sunday (which do not count in the estimated shipment time), then you are probably OK.

Glucosamine And MSM Synergistic for Arthritis

Glucosamine and MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) combined are more effective against osteoarthritis than either agent alone, according to researchers. With the addition of Chondroitin and Hyaluronic Acid, the combination is even more effective.

In a clinical trial, 118 patients with mild to moderate osteoarthritis were treated three times daily with either 500 milligrams of glucosamine, 500 milligrams of MSM, a combination of both, or an inactive placebo.

After 12 weeks of treatment, the average pain score had fallen from 1.74 to 0.65 in the glucosamine-only group. In MSM-only participants, it fell from 1.53 to 0.74. However, in the combination group, it fell from 1.7 to 0.36.

Hyaluronic Joint Complex - The Next Generation in Joint Formulas

Glucosamine, Chondroitin and sometimes MSM are the most popular supplements for joint conditions. This new formula combines glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM and hyaluronic acid to increase the effectiveness of the original glucosamine and chondroitin formulas.

Glucosamine is an amino sugar-a molecule made from an amino acid and a simple sugar. Amino sugars are the basis of virtually all connective tissues and lubricating fluids in the body.

Chondroitin sulfates main role is in keeping cartilage fluid and elastic. It is found naturally in the body, where it is one of the critical compounds that makes up connective tissue. Connective tissue is responsible for building and supporting cartilage found in the joints and elsewhere.

MSM, or methylsulfonylmethane, is a naturally occurring form of organic sulfur found in body fluids and tissue, cow's milk, plants and most natural foods. Sulfur may promote joint flexibility due to its role in supporting joint lubrication and movement.

Hyaluronic acid is a polysaccharide chain found throughout the body. It is a major component of joint tissue that helps to hold lubricating moisture in joints and cartilage, affecting their resilience, elasticity, and strength.

Information on the new hyaluronic acid joint complex can be found here.

Topical Hyaluronic Acid Speeds Burn Healing Time

From the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Centre Hospitalier Universitaire, Toulouse Rangueil, France, researchers report topical application of hyaluronic acid speeds burn healing time.

This multicenter, multinational, randomized, double-blind, controlled, parallel-group study, was designed to assess the efficacy and safety of a fixed combination topical medicinal product, containing 0.2% hyaluronic acid and 1% silver sulfadiazine (HA-SSD) (Connettivina Plus cream) versus 1% silver sulfadiazine cream alone (SSD), in the treatment of second-degree burns.

CONCLUSION: The observed shorter time to healing caused by the fixed combination is clinically relevant and further demonstrates the wound healing activity of Hyaluronic Acid.

My Recommendations

I have often been asked "What supplements would you recommend for me?"

To answer that question, I wrote a page which presents my recommendations for the typical U.S. adult. We summarize years of research and study to recommend the best supplements for you. For the best value, I recommend that a typical American adult take Life Force multivitamin without iron, a calcium/mineral supplement, and Omega-3 fish oil. Seniors should also take CoenzymeQ10.

My multivitamin recomendation is based on the highest ranked multivitamin in a published survey of 500 multivitamins in the U.S. and Canada. Yet this top-ranked multivitamin is reasonably priced. The cost is as low as $12.25 per month. Have a look!
